Denture cream settlements are monetary awards granted to those who have suffered serious side effects associated with the use of denture creams with zinc. Some brands of denture creams are zinc-free. However, the mainstream brands, particularly Fixodent which is distributed by Proctor & Gamble (“P&G”) and Super Poligrip which is distributed by GlaxoSmithKline (“GSK”), contain zinc, which can allegedly put users at risk of developing life-altering health problems.
In recent years, public awareness of the dangers of denture creams with zinc has grown significantly. The American Academy of Neurology, as well as other scientific journals, concluded that overuse of denture creams with zinc put users at risk of developing:
- blood disorders, such as anemia and neutropenia
- copper deficiency
- myelopathy, a disease that affects the spinal cord
- neuropathy, nerve damage that can result in nerve pain, loss of sensation, and/or sensations of tingling and/or burning
- zinc poisoning, excessive levels of zinc in the blood that can result in balancing and coordination impairments, weakness in the extremities, and/or nerve damage.
Super Poligrip and Fixodent Settlements
GSK and P&G have taken two different approaches to the news that their denture creams with zinc can cause severe health risks. GSK took Super Poligrip off the market in February 2010 and introduced a zinc-free version of the denture cream in April 2010. In contrast, P&G continues to market Fixodent and has made no indication that it will take Fixodent off the market.
A number of lawsuits were filed against both GSK and P&G, and Chaffin Luhana LLP has filed more denture cream lawsuits than any other firm in the country. With litigation currently pending in these cases, dozens of GSK settlements and P&G settlements will likely be awarded over the next few years.
