More than 9 million cribs made by various manufacturers have been recalled in the U.S. by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) since September, 2007, due to reports that they have caused entrapment, bone fractures, strangulation, concussions, and in the worst cases, wrongful death. The largest of these crib recalls, judged to be the largest crib recall in U.S. history, took place in November 2009 when the CPSC recalled roughly 2.1 million Stork Craft drop-side cribs due to reports that defects in the drop side’s design were causing it to be improperly installed, ultimately resulting in crib malfunctions.
Another more recent crib recall in February 2010 targeted the œChildESIGNS drop-side cribs made by Generation 2 (This company reportedly has not been in operation since 2005). Among the complaints associated with these defective cribs were eight reports regarding mattresses slipping, 20 reports of serious bruising and bone fractures, and three reports of suffocation due to crib dysfunction. Ultimately, roughly 500,000 of these cribs, which were sold widely through major retailers such as WalMart and Kmart, were recalled.
Such problems with drop-side cribs led the CPSC to ban these types of cribs in December 2010. The ban went into effect in June of 2011.
