Fixodent lawsuits are products liability cases that seek to recover compensation for the injuries and losses suffered by those who used Fixodent. Because Fixodent contains zinc, those who use it are at risk of developing painful, debilitating health complications, including blood disorders and myelopathy. Produced and marketed by Proctor & Gamble (“P&G”), Fixodent is a popular denture cream, specifically marketed as, among others, Fixodent Denture Original Adhesive Cream and Fixodent Complete Denture Adhesive Cream, all of which contain zinc.
If someone gets too much zinc, it can cause a variety of severe health problems, including zinc poisoning, which results in copper deficiency, nerve damage, loss of balance and/or coordination, weakness in the extremities and blood disorders, including anemia and neutrpenia.
Fixodent Denture Cream
Usage directions on Fixodent’s packaging have traditionally been unclear, and many users were not aware that they should use only a small amount of Fixodent once per day. Consequently, many consumers were overusing the cream and being exposed to excessive amounts of zinc. This problem took the national spotlight in 2008 with the American Academy of Neurology’s report, Denture Cream: An Unusual Source of Excess Zinc, Leading to Hypocupremia and Neurological Disease.
Among this report’s findings was the fact that overuse of Fixodent (and other zinc denture creams, such as GlaxoSmithKline’s (“GSK”) Super PoliGrip) significantly increases the risk that users could develop zinc poisoning, neuropathy, blood disorders, copper deficiency and myelopathy.
Unlike their competitor, GSK, P&G continues to market Fixodent with zinc. However, P&G has added a warning on their corporate website and the product’s packaging to alert consumers that they should only use minimal amounts of Fixodent. We believe those warnings remain inadequate.
