Produced by the C.B. Fleet Company, Fleet Phospho Soda is an over-the-counter (OTC) or prescription oral sodium phosphate (OSP) medication used to cleanse the bowels prior to a colonoscopy or surgical procedure. Taken with water, this laxative causes patients to relieve their bowels within 30 minutes to 6 hours. Other popular brands of OSPs, like Fleet Phospho Soda, include Viscol and OsmoPrep (both of which are manufactured by Salix Pharmaceuticals).
Fleet Phospho Soda Kidney Damage
Use of Fleet Phospho Soda and other oral sodium phosphates have been reported to cause a severe kidney injury known as acute phosphate nephropathy. When this serious Fleet Phospho Soda side effect occurs, calcium-phosphate crystals develop within the kidneys, causing injured parties to develop lower back pain, urination problems, muscle spasms, and/or seizures. In some cases of acute phosphoate nephropathy, the kidney damage is permanent. To date, 21 patients have reportedly developed severe kidney damage as a result of using OSPs.
Patients with the highest risk of developing Fleet Phospho Soda kidney damage include those who are older than 55 and have a medical history of kidney trauma.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) mandated that some OSPs have black box warnings (the most serious FDA warning preceding a recall), and in December 2008, the FDA issued a national safety alert regarding the dangers of serious kidney damage from using Fleet Phospho Soda. Shortly after, C.B. Fleet pulled this OSP from the U.S. market.
Fleet Phospho Soda Litigation
Despite the fact that Fleet Phospho Soda has been recalled in the U.S., this laxative has already caused many to suffer from some irreversible and devastating health complications. These parties will have a compelling products liability case against C.B. Fleet, and they may be entitled to compensation for their injuries and losses by following through with Fleet Phospho Soda litigation.
