Meridia

First approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1997, Meridia (generically referred to as sibutramine) is an appetite-suppressing amphetamine-related medication used to treat obesity. Meridia was initially introduced and marketed by Knoll Pharmaceuticals and was later manufactured by Abbott Laboratories. Meridia has also been marketed under the brand names Reductil and Sibutrex.

Meridia Side Effects

Meridia is no longer available in the U.S., as it was taken off the market in October 2010 due to reports that this medication increased the risk of sustaining a heart attack or stroke (especially in those with a history of cardiovascular disease). Additional Meridia side effects include arrhythmia, paresthesia (a nervous disorder), depression, and suicidal thoughts. Currently, researchers are investigating whether Meridia also has the potential to cause kidney failure, gastrointestinal problems, and sudden death.

Meridia patients who begin having seizures, chest pain, urination problems, paralysis on one side of the body, loss of vision, or fever should seek emergency medical attention to prevent potentially fatal health complications.

Meridia Lawsuits & Class Action Cases

Meridia lawsuits and class action cases are aimed at holding the makers of this drug legally and financially responsible for injuring patients. While the type of Meridia lawsuit that is best suited for a particular plaintiff will depend on the nature and severity of his Meridia injuries, in general, class action Meridia cases are best suited for patients who have sustained similar Meridia side effects and who want some distance from the legal process.

Meridia Settlements

Those who choose to stand up for their legal rights and follow through with a Meridia lawsuit may secure Meridia settlements that compensate them for their injuries and losses. In most cases, the makers of Meridia will offer Meridia settlements well before a case goes to trial.
