Gleason goes on to add that the selection is based on much more than nominations. Lawyers can participate by nominating peers, but that’s only a part of the selection process. In addition to nominations, the research staff also searches for lawyers who have attained certain honors or results.
They then evaluate candidates by 12 indicators of peer recognition and professional achievement such as verdicts and settlements, special licenses and certifications, pro bono and community service, scholarly lectures and writing, representative clients, and more. Once the first part of the evaluation is completed, candidates are grouped according to their primary practice area. Those who received the highest point totals in the previous steps are asked to serve on a review panel. Finally, candidates are regrouped again in categories based on firm size, and those with the highest review totals are selected.
Bar associations and courts across the country have recognized the legitimacy of the Super Lawyers selection process. After examining the Super Lawyer selection process, the New Jersey Supreme Court reported that the “procedures are very sophisticated, comprehensive and complex.” The final list of Super Lawyers is printed in the Super Lawyers magazine and in leading city and regional magazines across the country as a guide for those individuals seeking quality representation.
