NuvaRing lawsuits are product liability cases that seek to recover compensation for women who have sustained serious injuries, including strokes and blood clots, as a result of using NuvaRing. Nuvaring is a contraceptive vaginal insert in the form of a plastic ring made by Merck (formerly Organon and Schering-Plough).
First approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in October 2001, NuvaRing is a flexible ring that works for three weeks after insertion and used as directed and according to Merck is 99 percent effective at preventing pregnancy. NuvaRing works by slowly releasing the hormones etonogestrel (a form of progestin) and ethinyl estradiol (a form of estrogen) into a woman’s body over a 21-day period (120 micrograms [g] of etonogestrel and 14 g of ethinyl estradiol). Following the three-week period, the NuvaRing is directed to be removed to allow for menstruation.
Most women using NuvaRing experience mild side effects that will dissipate as their bodies adjust to this birth control device. Clinical trials found that the most common side effects reported by 5 to 14 percent of women using NuvaRing include nausea, headache, vaginitis, vaginal secretions and/or weight gain. These studies also found that about 2.5 percent of NuvaRing users experienced device-related discomfort (foreign-body sensation, sexual impairment or device expulsion).
NuvaRing Side Effects and Stroke Lawsuits
Like other similar birth control medications and devices, NuvaRing has also been found to increase the risk that some women will develop serious, potentially fatal side effects, some of which include:
- Blood clots and deep vein thrombosis (DVT, is a condition in which blood clots become stuck in the legs’ deep veins, impeding health circulation)
- Cerebral hemorrhage (bleeding in the brain)
- Dangerously high blood pressure
- Gallbladder disease
- Heart attack, stroke and/or pulmonary embolism (These conditions arise when blood clots hinder circulation of blood to the heart, brain and/or lungs, respectively.)
- Liver tumors (either malignant or benign).
NuvaRing users who develop any of the above side effects may have a legal claim and should contact a NuvaRing Lawyer at Chaffin Luhana LLP immediately. They may be entitled to a settlement for their losses and injuries if they start and follow through with a NuvaRing side effects lawsuit.
