NuvaRing side effects are commonly mild, treatable and fleeting. Infrequently, NuvaRing side effects can cause serious, life-threatening health complications that require emergency medical attention in order to prevent a wrongful death.
Within recent years, news of severe NuvaRing side effects have gained attention. Many women injured by NuvaRing side effects have already filed defective drug lawsuits against Merck, the manufacturer of NuvaRing in the U.S.
There are currently more than 100 NuvaRing lawsuits filed against Merck, and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reports that it has received more than 300 reports regarding serious injuries associated with NuvaRing use.
NuvaRing and Blood Clots
Clinical trials have indicated that some women have an increased risk of developing blood clots as a result of using NuvaRing. Blood clots are semi-solid masses of blood cells that can interrupt healthy circulation. While milder cases of blood clots occur in the body’s deep veins (and result in pain and inflammation), more serious cases of blood clots arise when they travel to vital organs (i.e. the heart, lungs and/or brain).
NuvaRing and DVT
Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a condition in which blood clots become trapped in the body’s deep veins (namely within the legs) and hinder blood flow. NuvaRing users who develop DVT can experience pain, redness and swelling at the site of the blood clot, and they should follow through with all prescribed treatments in order to prevent more serious, potentially fatal health complications (discussed below).
NuvaRing and Stroke
When NuvaRing blood clots impede the flow of blood to the brain, a woman will suffer from a stroke, the symptoms of which include:
- Blurry vision or loss of vision that affects one eye more significantly
- Dizziness
- Impaired speech
- Sudden, intense headache
- Sudden lack of sensation in the face and/or arm and leg on one side of the body
The faster a NuvaRing stroke is diagnosed and treated, the better the prognosis will be.
NuvaRing and Pulmonary Embolism (PE)
A pulmonary embolism ocurrs when a NuvaRing blood clot makes its way to the lungs and interrupts breathing. PE symptoms may include any combination of:
- Breathing difficulties, particularly shortness of breath and wheezing
- Coughing
- Chest pain
- Dizziness, lightheadedness or fainting
- Excessive sweating
- Increased or irregular heart beat
- Inflammation of the legs
